About our Studio and Bikram Yoga

The Bikram Yoga Guelph studio was designed and built by Tom Dowd who is the studio owner and a certified Bikram Instructor. Upon completion early in 2009, the studio received the Gordon Couling Award from The Architectural Conservancy of Ontario in recognition of an exemplary restoration project in the County of Wellington. Bikram Yoga Guelph was also a site in Doors Open 2009.

Bikram’s Beginning Hatha Yoga classes, a series of 26 yoga postures and 2 breathing exercises taught in a room heated to 105 degrees Fahrenheit for 90 minutes. By heating the room students are able to work in a safe environment that will relieve one’s body resistance without risking injury while cleansing one’s body of all toxins.

Within the 90 minutes all students will work on every muscle, tendon, joint, ligament, internal organ, and gland while circulating 100% fresh oxygen through their blood and bodies. This will help students increase their concentration, patience, determination, self-control while decreasing stress. It leads one to a healthier body and mind. Students can expect that each class will help their bodies to promote weight loss, limit the effects of aging while assisting in preventing illness and injuries.

Bikram’s Hot Yoga is for everyone. To quote Bikram’s teacher, Bishnu Ghosh, it’s never too late, you’re never too old, you’re never too sick, to start again from scratch. Come to class, and with the guidance of your teacher, simply approach every posture to the best of your ability and you will receive 100% benefit.

If you feel nervous, scared or a little intimidated no problem. Many people feel that way initially. Just don’t let it stop you from coming to class. Bikram designed this class for beginners, so know that with a little practice and experience, you’ll quickly feel right at home.

You will feel challenged by the yoga during class – everyone does! Always work to your edge, but listen to your body and your inner wisdom. Never be afraid to sit down if you need to. It’s normal, especially when you first get started, to feel dizzy, nauseated or lightheaded. It’s temporary, and as your body acclimates and detoxes, these sensations will disappear.

During class nobody will look at you or judge you. The teacher will guide you and instruct you, always with compassion and respect. There’s no need or reason to be self-conscious. It’s also helpful to realize everyone’s focus is on themselves – they are working too hard to even notice you!

There are so many celebrities who choose to do Bikram Yoga as their exercise plan  –  Madona, Lady Gaga, Jennifer Aniston, George Glooney, David Beckham, Beyonce, Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore, Jim Carrey,   – the list goes on. We are very lucky to have the original hot yoga in our lovely city of Guelph. They say Lady Gaga’s success comes from Bikram Yoga. Why not get happier and more successful?  Come step in and change your life to the better 🙂

How to prepare for your first class?

  • When you come for your first class please arrive 20 to 30 minutes early. There is some paper work to fill out and being early will give you a chance to fill out all necessary forms, get changed and settled into the yoga room before the class starts.
  • Make sure you’re well hydrated – drink at least 2 liters of water  throughout the day on practice days. Bring water to the class with you too. It takes 2 hours to hydrate your body – the more you drink throughout the day the better you feel in class!
  • Avoid eating a big meal 2-3 hours before your class.
  •  Wear light, fitted clothing, being able to see your knees. We have a good range of yoga specific clothes in our retail area.
  • Let us know about any injuries or health issues. If you are pregnant consult with your doctor first and let us know too. We have the perfect pregnancy DVD for you!

What shall I bring to class?

  • A yoga mat – complimentary for your very first class and then available to rent or buy.
  • Large towels – one for your mat and one for showering. We also rent and sell hot yoga towels.
  • 2 liters of water – also available in studio
  • A smile and open mind – ready to work hard and have fun. You will feel amazing after your class!

What to wear

Women:

  • TOPS: Sleeveless t-shirt, tank top, jog bra
  • BOTTOMS: Leotard, dance wear, athletic wear

Men:

  • TOPS: T-shirt, tank top (optional)
  • BOTTOMS: Board shorts, bathing suit bottoms, or running shorts

What shall I expect after class

  • After class, most people experience a  light, energetic feeling. However, it’s not unusual to feel slightly overwhelmed because your body has never worked so hard.
  • If you leave no more than one day between classes, you will double the benefits.

Before Class

Be on time to class. All classes will start on time.

  • Write your name legibly to our sign in sheet.
  • Please remove your shoes in the lobby and leave all personal belongings in the change rooms or your vehicle. There are no cell phones, pagers or any other electronic equipment allowed in the yoga room.
  • Remember to hydrate. Please drink plenty of water throughout the day before coming to class.
  • Avoid wearing perfume, cologne, body lotion, jewelry or watches while practicing.
  • Make sure you and others around you have a view of the front mirror.
  • Respect other participants and enjoy the yoga room in silence. All questions should be asked before or after class, not during the session.

During Class

Please remain silent in the yoga room. A number of students will use this time for meditation and to center themselves.

  • Stay in the Yoga Room – All classes are 90 minutes long and it is advised that you remain in the room for the entire session. It is a part of Bikram Yoga to remain in the room for the entire 90 minutes. If you are feeling sick please sit down or stand still until you feel better. It is important that you help your body become accustomed to the temperature of the yoga room.
  • Drink in Between Postures – Once class has begun please do not drink any water until after the Eagle Pose (the Teacher will announce a water break). Your body needs to warm up from the inside. And after that you can have water in between postures.
  • Begin at the back – It would be appreciated if experienced students practiced at the front of the room while new students stayed to the back. Students at the front will be role models for newer students and help the teacher guide students on how to perform poses.
  • Flow with the class – New students please remember that the first class is a starting point and you will have to set your own pace, but we do ask that you remain in the room for the entire 90 minute session. Sit down, relax and take in the class from those around you.
  • Let the Sweat Drip – Wiping sweat from your skin will only make you hotter. There is no need to bring any extra towels in the room or fidget around – it does not serve you well. Your body will get even hotter trying to recreate the sweat you wiped off 😉
  •  Stay in Savasana!  – We all work as a class and Savasana is part of the class energy.  Your final complete relaxation in Savasana is an important part of your practice as well and is included in the 90 minutes. Enjoy the energy you have created and be ready to take on the world.

How often should I attend class

Attending Bikram Yoga once a week will initiate some amazing changes in your body. A twice a week practice maintains this level of attainment. Attending your third class in  a week though, is where all the growth and breakthroughs occur. As such, we recommend a 3 time a week practice for maximum benefit.  If you find yourself coming every day – this is a great thing to be addicted to :).

It doesn’t take long to see changes in your physical body either in the form of strength, flexibility and weight regulation. Your metabolism will improve greatly and your stamina increases quickly. These are just a few of the reasons nearly 5 million people worldwide choose hot yoga as their exercise of choice.
