Hydration

Are you drinking enough water? Here are some tips for you!

 

1) Drinking lots of water and making sure you are hydrated is one of the best things you can do for your health

2) It is important to drink plenty of water the entire day before and after you come to class. Also, we recommend bringing a bottle of water to each class. The amount of water one should drink is dependent on body weight.

3) It takes about 2 hours to hydrate your body!

4) The medical profession, as well as nutritionists, state that the human body requires approximately 1.5L – 2.5L of water each day to promote healthy bodily function.

5) While practicing yoga in a heated room, your body requires an adequate amount of water to allow perspiration to release heat from the body as you practice. It is suggested that you consume an additional 1.5L – 2.5L of water on the day that you intend to come to class. If your body is sufficiently hydrated, you will be in a better state to tolerate and enjoy the heat.

6) You may want to consider taking an electrolyte supplement to replace trace minerals, ideal for sports performance, people working in high temperatures and anyone experiencing high levels of fluid loss.

7) Refrain from wiping the sweat off your skin. If the sweat is removed from the skin, evaporation will not occur, and heat will be retained.

8) BEWARE of caffeinated and/or alcoholic beverages since they increase fluid loss and cause dehydration. In addition to your normal water intake, drink an equal amount of water to every glass of alcohol or caffeinated beverage.

Most of us are not hydrated enough and its especially hard to hydrate yourself in summer. Drink more ! And don’t be afraid of salt. If you drink a LOT of water and avoid salt in your diet, then the water just goes through you. In order to hydrate your inner organs too   – have some sea salt on your avocado  – just don’t be afraid of salt if you consume a lot of water. They go hand in hand!

Your physical body is the temple in which your spirit flows and your mind rests. Treat your body well and all the rest will fit into place.

Benefits of being well hydrated:

  • Body strength and energy will be enhanced in class.

  • Mental clarity is improved such that focus and short term memory increases.

  • Digestion is more efficient, allowing the body to process and eliminate waste and distribute nutrients more effectively.

  • Skin becomes radiant and soft. Hydrated skin appears plump which enhances the skin texture.

  • Inner organs and cells benefit from complete water distribution in a well-hydrated body.

  • Back and joint pain is relieved

  • Weight is maintained and controlled, since feelings of thirst are often misinterpreted as feelings of hunger.

If you feel thirsty, then you are already dehydrated!
